Women achievers from Asia Pacific honoured at 3rd Women Icons Asia Summit & Awards

Chennai-based Indian architect Ponni M Concessao wins her 89th award

The 3rd Women Icons Asia Summit & Awards 2019 was held at the Hotel Regent Singapore on May 31, 2019. This year, the summit brought together women achievers from Asia including Malaysia, India, Indonesia & Singapore. Apart from honouring their success and accomplishments, the forum discussed the challenges towards achieving gender diversity and inclusion in workplaces.

An initiative by Singapore-headquartered, Business Excellence & Research Group (BERG) Pte ltd, Women Icons Asia is a platform that celebrates and honours the accomplishments and contributions of women who have excelled in different spheres of life and are an inspiration to society.

The summit discussions were centered around the topic “Achieving Gender Diversity at Workplace – Is Enough being done to create a robust talent pipeline.” The panelists included Christina Teo, chief builder-she1K; founder –StartupAsiaWomen; Kathryn Woof, MD, 33 Talent; Been Natarajan, head of Talent & Vibe, Zeemart Asia Pte Ltd, Victoria Murphy, VP, Randstad Sourcerightand, Karthik Tirupathi, CEO, Napier Healthcare Pte Ltd. The session was moderated by Vishwesh Iyer, founder & managing partner, BERG Singapore.

“Achieving gender diversity and inclusiveness at the workplace and in social environments is much more than getting certain numbers. Till organisations do not make it a business imperative and start measuring outcomes, it is going to remain a challenge. The Women Icons initiative has been making steady progress in getting a dialogue going in this regard, and we hope to expand it further in the coming days,” said Iyer.

Following the discussions, the Women Icons Asia 2018 Awards were presented. Among the recipients were Dr Ponni M. Concessao, architect, Oscar & Ponni Architects, India.  She was among a total of 12 Women Achievers from across India, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore representing diverse professions and sectors at this edition of the Women Icons Asia Summit & Awards.

Concessao is a reputed architect whose career has spanned decades devoted to design and has undertaken award-winning works that have covered prototypes of town planning, buildings and interiors in all parts of India.  Her contributions include award winning designs, authoring and publishing technical papers, architectural education, conservation, women’s rights and nation building. She has also dedicated herself to several social causes and charity projects, including schools for the underprivileged and Tsunami housing. This is her 99th award so far.
