Apartment 12’s perfect play of colours

Anushka Contractor designs a welcoming, vaastu-inspired house for a family friend keeping in mind their love for art

Located in Peddar Road, Mumbai, the four bedroom apartment was designed for an art enthusiast family who have collected a vast collection over the years. The existing art collection was subtle and bold at the same time, with abstract figures. The brief mentioned a white and maintenance free home. Each room was given colour codes to design as per Vaastu. The clients wanted minimal furniture in the whole house. “We created hidden storage spaces for them just for essentials. The wife wanted to experience a walk-in wardrobe in her room and so did her daughter, therefore we incorporated them in their bedrooms,” adds the designer Anushka Contractor.

The sturdy, pine wood entrance door opens into a passage with veneer panelled walls on the right with art. A tall shoe cabinet stands between the daughter's & son’s bedrooms. It's designed in a ribbed pattern with a handless detail. On the left, a raw wooden door slides behind the mirrored wood partition and opens into the hidden closet. Ahead are the twin mirror-wood partitions in a grid pattern which frame the kitchen entrance. At the end of the passage, there’s a wooden framed glass door with a brass handle. This opens into the plush living & dining area.

The daughter’s bedroom is the first room when you enter the apartment. The planning is done in such a way where the walk-in wardrobe is the first space you see as you enter. Along this, is the veneer panelling on walls. The wardrobe is finished in glossy opal green PU paint while the bed upholstered in cream fabric has a clean, light design. A small desk with a window style Gold leaf frame and lemon yellow PU paint finished overhead is fixed to the wall. The window wall faces South-West where heavy rains often create problems from outside. So, the window frame is cladded in marble to protect the wall which is also aesthetically pleasing. The bathroom attached to this room is a combination of grey and white marble with small pastel coloured patterned tiled flooring.

The Son’s bedroom comprises a white PU painted floating bed with a wall fixed grey fabric headboard, marble cladded seating, and customised wall lamps. The wall opposite the bed and the bathroom door is panelled with wood veneers with a TV unit & desk area of glossy white and grey units with a wooden countertop. A featured lego detail is at the edge of the TV unit giving a fun characteristic to the room. The bathroom is entirely cladded with travertine marble with wooden looking tiles as the flooring.

With its modern white acrylic & wood laminate finish along with a red travertine backsplash, the kitchen looks functional and elegant. Most appliances are built-in for convenience. The red & white coloured ceramic knobs serve as a better option than long handles to add an interesting design element to the white kitchen. All the walls are cladded with royal beige marble throughout.

The living room has a neutral colour palette of breccia marble flooring and wood panelling against a white background. There are pops of colour brought in by the red leather furniture, yellow grey carpet and blue fabric bar stools. The ceiling height is low in the apartment. Hence, it is painted plain white with no difference in level throughout, except in the living space. The bar area has a dark veneer pattern finished wall and ceiling. This same panel runs over the hidden built-in bar fridge and storage.

The dining area enjoys a white and cream colour palette with bold colours used in loose furniture customised to the desired size and look. The dining table is finished in a white PU top with gold triangular pattern in the middle with a built-in table runner and a clear glass top for protection. It is paired with dining chairs made of wood and upholstered in fabric, and credenza by the window in an elegant champagne gold leaf finish. In addition, there are twin bar carts on either side of the credenza. These have been custom designed in brass. The dining table and chairs are superbly complimented by the large artwork on the back wall.

The master bedroom room, as per vastu shastra, has been designed in the colour code of red or coral shades. Upon entry, there’s a walk-in wardrobe ahead attached to the bathroom where the colour combination is of colorado white and opera fantasy marble and the shower area has a white wood look tile flooring. Opposite the bed is the TV unit and wood panelled wall with a raw wood desk-top painted in white and gold streaks.
