The Business of Architecture

Leading architects got together to discuss current trends in the business and how best to run an architectural practice in these trying times

Architect and Interiors India hosted its third webinar of the series on Designing for a New World – Post COVID-19. The episode dealt with a topic that has been a concern area – especially in these trying times – for all architecture & design practices: The Business of Architecture. To deliberate, we brought together renowned names in the field, who spoke about how they are dealing with the effects of the pandemic at a company level, and the evolving trends when it comes to running their practices. The webinar also saw an enthusiastic audience posing questions to the panel, with the panellists answering in a frank manner.
Our distinguished panel consisted of:
•           Vivek Gupta, principal architect, Arvind Vivek and Associates
•           Karl Wadia, senior associate, Architect Hafeez Contractor
•           Husna Rahaman, principal creative director, Fulcrum Studio
•           Supriya Thyagarajan, principal, Perkins Eastman
•           Esra Aydınoğlu, architect & architectural glass product manager, SFG

What was endearing to see was that the panellists recounted their own journeys, while also highlighting why it was important to stay resilient at this time. When speaking of the issues at hand, whether it was the fact that work had come to a standstill or the shortage of labour going forward, they spoke candidly, also setting out guidelines that are the need of the hour. From taking care of labourers and retaining talent, to the ability to reimagine projects and choose the right materials, and from empowering local artisans, to reducing supply chains, they made some truly pertinent observations.
