With a design language that draws its inspiration from Scandinavian and Japanese cultures, Harshil believes that minimalism in spaces provides clarity, focus and soothes the mind, allowing one to enjoy and experience the space as it’s truly meant to be.
He started his practice in 2016 and loves to create clean and simple designs that have the attention to the minutest of details. He loves experimenting with materials and techniques (both new and old) and bringing in some element of the outdoors (plants, most often, in the case of interiors). He also loves working with brick, in-situ concrete floors, natural stones, metal in-lay, mosaics and more.
His most significant project is the design of his own studio, wherein he converted a garage into a fully functional architecture design studio, with the space still functioning as a garage! This adaptable space was created with the use of collapsible furniture and optimized space planning. Compact furniture, and keeping most of the shelving off the floor ensured that the floor was free for the car to move in. The furniture was customised to ensure that everything that was needed in an architecture studio fit in – work desks, space for a printer, ample storage for material samples, catalogues, books, stationary, files and folders, etc, and even a mini-pantry. “We were also looking to keep the costs minimal. So, strategic use of inexpensive materials and re-use of existing furniture was key,” explains Harshil.
