Ashiesh Shah has been the toast of many seasons. The much-published architect and his award-winning practice Ashiesh Shah Architecture + Design (ASAD), have either lent their design expertise to A-list projects, or are in the process of doing so. Shah’s endeavour towards bringing forth an aesthetic immersed in simplicity and charged with positivity, finds resonance in an enduring inspiration: Wabi Sabi, the Buddhism-inspired Japanese concept that celebrates imperfection and incompleteness. “Nothing is permanent, nothing is finished and nothing is perfect,” emphasises the alumnus of Parsons School of Design, New York, adding that he appreciates spaces that incorporate natural objects and processes. While the initial stream of projects comprised residences, the current mix features a sizeable amount of hospitality, retail and offices spaces — like the much-talked-about Nido and Masque restaurants and the retail space for Le Mill, for instance — all showing his signature-blend of clean lines and tangible textures. Having had the opportunity to work on diverse spaces, Shah is keen to augment his product design portfolio, which currently includes a melange of lighting and furniture, with several pieces being inspired by the vernacular Indian idiom. A corollary to his design practice, The Atelier, which amalgamates experimentation, ideation and research, is a step in this direction.
