Infusing life into the etymology of ‘architecture’ as an act of building, is what makes it a verb for academician and renowned practitioner Karan Grover.  Derived from his mentor John Turner’s book Housing as a Verb (at the Architectural Association, London), this is where he received his grounding. Grover’s decision to be an architect came when he opted for cardboard modelling as an elective at Mayo College in Ajmer.  He graduated in Architecture from MSU Baroda and, though he was immersed in Western design ideologies with his education abroad, Grover came full circle with his post-grad thesis ‘Housing the urban poor in India’ . His desire to stay relevant in the Indian environs saw him part ways with his partner Manoj Patel. He set up Karan Grover & Associates in 1985  to connect his work with the people he was designing for.   KGA, a consortium of professionals, extend their overarching design philosophy of interpretations of traditions under a single umbrella. Their first epoch project was the Institute for Plasma Research. Other milestones include the Tribal Centre in Tejgarh and the Uttarayan Art Centre in Jaspur. Grover is committed, through his lectures across the globe, to spreading the KGA beliefs on the importance of tradition, working with climate and building people-responsive environments. No wonder the restoration and transformation of old industrial sheds into a cultural museum space for Alembic, is what’s presently exciting the heritage activist.
