Minnie Bhatt has always believed in going with the flow. When the Commerce graduate realised that she had a penchant for interiors, she unhesitatingly changed the course of her profession. Then, when she felt the need for a greater creative expression, she decided to fly solo, with a single project in her bag. But her judgement, intuition, common sense — call it what you will — has paid off. The portfolio of her 2008-born eponymous studio includes several celebrity residences and a bunch of popular restaurants and bars in Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru. Her work is eclectic and timeless — informed by the heritage structures and the charm of vintage buildings of South Mumbai, where she has grown up. “We always try to be true to the clients’ sensibilities, or the perception and positioning of the brands we work with,” she discloses. Bhatt, who dreams of designing a resort in the hills, is happy that travel and internet have exposed both, her and her clients to newer influences — which helps her to steer clear of tropes and stereotypes. A good example of this is Ishaara, whose waitstaff is differently abled (deaf and mute). The space will revel in natural light and greenery, with finishes like cast concrete and terrazzo.
