At Mumbai-based IM Kadri Architects, principal architect and partner Rahul Kadri is in the pursuit of “meaning” more than form. The practice was conceived in 1960 by his father IM Kadri, and over these five decades it has evolved from an individual-run practice to one that relies on the intelligence and ownership of everyone on the team. “We have processes to develop intelligent design briefs that reflect our client’s highest aspirations (and) everyone participates in design,” Rahul highlights. After 53 years of experience and 85 large-scale projects across India and overseas, it has been a successful model given that the firm’s repeat clients include the Taj Group, JSW, Symbiosis and Club Mahindra.
Rahul describes their work as focused on the client’s highest needs, sustainability and a social perspective that is deeply embedded in their consciousness. Their goal is to build structurally viable, economical and robust architecture that is contemporary yet timeless, contextual, sustainable and environmentally holistic as well as socially responsive where people and activities thrive. Besides architecture, Rahul has been actively involved in the development of open spaces in Mumbai, along with charitable projects like building schools, hospitals and centres for individuals with special needs. As a member of the Nepean Sea Road Citizens Forum, he has undertaken an urban street revamp project for the redevelopment of Nepean Sea Road. He is also a member of the BMC School Infrastructure Committee that is instrumental in setting up processes and monitoring the upgradation of municipal schools in Mumbai.
