Sonali Bhagwati’s entry to CEPT, Ahmedabad as a tender 17 year old, was a life changer.  Those five years were a journey of exploration into architecture, art and all forms of design, challenging her to think beyond existing parameters. An ardent admirer of BV Doshi’s work, Bhagwati, the recipient of a scholarship from L’Institut Francais d’Architecture, was ready to catapult into the world of architecture. She embarked on her practice with her closest friend, now husband, Sohrab Dalal, and Khushroo Kalyanwala in a garage office. In 1993, the restructuring of the firm with Dalal and Bhagwati as partners led to the birthing of Spazzio Design.  In 2010, the firm merged with Mohit Gujral’s Designplus, of which Bhagwati is presently the president.  Designplus takes detailing very seriously, with elaborate construction documentation for their unique designs for every project. The list of projects is comprehensive – a large automotive company, the first Nestle and GSK offices, The Adobe, SAMCO and Nasscom headquarters; merging Spazzio Design Architecture with Designplus and the takeover of the entity. Bhagwati’s involvement also includes city level projects taken up by the Delhi Urban Art Commission and the reframing of unified bye-laws for Delhi. Among her most recent projects
are the Thapar University (done in partnership with MCM), Double Tree Jaipur, and the headquarters of Renew Power, Concor and Hero.
