When Abhigyan Neogi’s art teacher in school, Jenson Anto, taught him how to emote graphically it sparked an interest in him. That it is possible to evoke an emotion on paper inspired him to become a sculptor. But the idea matured and he ended up choosing architecture at TVB School of Habitat Studies. Now, as a designer, he believes that each completed project – which is appreciated by the client and end-users – is an inspiration in itself.
At the studio that he founded in 2010, he creates impactful design, striving to “be true” in what they do. “There is no philosophy or one specific design style. Chromed’s niche – which is hospitality and luxury design – never fails to surprise for its ingenuity, daring and singular quest to uplift the ambience and break free to entertain,” he elaborates.
The 34-year-old’s most prominent and recent hospitality project is One8 Commune by Virat Kohli, a premium project that stands as a perfect and seamless realisation of the ace cricketer’s cool demeanour, pragmatic passion and exuberant energy into a brand establishment. The design language is based on the theme of togetherness that aims to bring together people of varied tastes and from different backgrounds. An overall colour palette in shades of purple and plum have been incorporated for a posh aesthetic. Minimal and simple furniture complement the seemingly plain colours and unambiguous design of the restaurant.
Neogi believes three aspects make a project aesthetically appealing. He explains, “One is rudimentary – follow a standard set of tried and tested norms; another is to outline a built environment with symmetry, trending colours, apt lighting and fundamental decor; and last is destruction, where we create an offbeat aura with a disruptive pattern of unanticipated aesthetics.” He challenges himself to demand ‘better than before’ from the design, delivering the best with each project.
