While drawing and painting have both been her long time passion, Anu Chauhan was more fascinated by how mere sketches can be transformed into brick-and-mortar buildings. It motivated her to build on her innate skills at Rizvi College of Architecture, Mumbai, at the same time being inspired by and learning from the works of design icons such as Ricardo Legorret – a prolific designer known for designing private houses, public buildings and master plans in Mexico and other countries.
Minimal and functional designs appeal to her the most, an approach she follows at Zero9 – a multifaceted design firm she formed in 2010 with Prashant Chauhan. Her expertise spans across four major quadrants, mainly advertising, exhibitions, architecture and interiors for commercial and residential projects.
“Our restless curiosity translates the client’s needs to reality, keeping sensible and sustainable design as the focus. Each project has a story to tell,” shares Chauhan. In the last decade, she has created award-winning “experiences” that have been recognised by various platforms such as at the IIID awards.
One such “experience” is The Midas Touch – a 2,500 sq-ft luxury apartment in Mumbai that has been created using a timeless and global style. Distinct colours and materials define the public and private zones of the residence. The living area exhibits a modern style with blush and light grey charcoal velvet sofas, statement wallpaper in an exclusive mauve shade and an ostrich feather floor lamp. The bar is the focal feature with its 10 ft long counter and an aquarium beneath.
The private sections of the residence stay true to the preferences of its owners. The master bedroom displays a warm ambience with its wooden flooring and a designer bed back. The daughter’s bedroom has feminine elements like the rose wallpaper, and a motorised round bed.
The 38-year-old describes her design language as “zen”, where visual graphics is one of her favourite elements to incorporate in the design. Each project is an iteration of this zen way of working.
