For Ayesha Puri, design runs in the family. With both parents being renowned architects, the 26-year-old grew up being privy to a plethora of design inspirations, which honed her sense of design. Given that most family holidays revolved around visits to structures of architectural interest, a privilege that was coupled with an early exposure to the works of icons like Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier, and supplemented by design lessons from her illustrious parents, Puri was always inclined to pursue architecture as a profession, and went on to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the University of Bath, England, in 2016.
“During the course of my degree, I worked at Urban Studio, Mumbai…where I learnt immensely about complex spatial modelling,” states Puri. This was followed by a stint at Alford Hall Monaghan Morris, London, where she was involved in the Google headquarters project. In 2018, Puri finally joined her parents’ firm, where she now handles individual projects under their guidance. “With everything I learn from each new project, I aim to broaden my design aspirations and extend them to cover not just architectural interiors, but also products, lighting and any other form of creative output I can channel,” confesses Puri.
In fact, she doesn’t shy away from testing fresh ideas on site, and enjoys the process of exploration and experimentation, as is evident in her recently completed project – the interior of India’s first laboratory-grown diamond jewellery store in Mumbai. Collaborating with artists, as well as graphic and product designers from different cities, has allowed Puri to fashion a space that challenges the norms of retail design for a jewellery brand. “Each element of the store is created with a strong message that aims to use art to stimulate one’s changing mindset about the future of the jewellery industry,” explains Puri.
