Design ni Dukaan
Veeram Shah
In 2013, architect Veeram Shah breathed life into “Design ni Dukaan,” a design studio in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, aptly named to signify ‘a shop for design. Veeram’s vision transcends traditional boundaries, focusing on design holistically, encompassing architecture, interior design, and furniture design projects, all without distinction of scale.
Design ni Dukaan is a community-based practice, shunning conventional hierarchies and embracing collaboration. Veeram believes that design is a collective expression born from life’s myriad experiences. Within his studio, designers from diverse backgrounds converge to celebrate the act of creation.
This practice seamlessly integrates the studio and workshop, where ideas are transformed into functional forms. Every member, from the principal architect to the artisans, holds equal importance. Intellectual discussions are grounded in technical feasibility, fostering a unique partnership between the designer and artisan.
Notable among Veeram’s completed projects is “Enclosure” in Himmatnagar, Gujarat, where the experience of space took precedence over external form. “The Mosaic House” in Mumbai showcases his mastery in interior and furniture design. Currently, Veeram is working on a residence in Navsari, Gujarat, an architectural project, and is engrossed in developing a range of furniture pieces by experimenting with his staple materials – teakwood and brass along with terrazzo.
