Design Dekko, a platform for the Indian architecture and design community, launches its first pop-up ‘Connections’ in Pune
Leading architects and designers like Madhav Raman, Kalpak Shah, Nishita Kamdar, Richa Bahl and Sarah Sham gave insightful presentations on topics ranging from home décor to technology
‘Connections by Design Dekko’ – a unique one-day pop-up event celebrating spaces and minds who shape them, made its debut at Godrej Rejuve, Keshavnagar, Pune in the presence of leading architects, interior designers and home décor enthusiasts.
Design Dekko is a unique brand agnostic platform led by the Godrej Group for architecture and interior design (AID) professionals to engage and collaborate with peers, brands and consumers. From existing or potential home owners, design enthusiasts to the most celebrated minds in the architecture and interior design fields, ‘Connections By Design Dekko’ aims to create an experience relevant for all through conversations and cross-pollination of ideas.
The evening panel was kicked off by painter and sculptor Ketaki Pimplakhare who shared how her work was her voice. Her art mirrored situations that moved her to express the harsh realities of social fabric. Pimplakhare’s personal emotional struggles sensitised her to use art as a form of therapy with underprivileged children in Rajasthan. Says the salt-and-pepper maned artist, “It is an awakening to work with these listless children who have been sold to cities, abused and then thrown back in their village, only to be shunned. Their paintings are revelations of their sordid experiences and, post the marathon painting sessions, you can actually see them walk away lighter.” This year, the art mela had 1,000 children participating.
The evening saw eminent speakers like Sarah Sham (Essajees Atelier), Richa Bahl (Richa Bahl Design Studio) and Nishita Kamdar (Studio Nishita Kamdar) present their design journeys. Moderated by Henry Skupniewicz, Godrej Design Lab, the discussion dwelt on the influence of colour in design, and whether or not experimentation is prudent. Architect Kalpak Shah of Studio Course shared simple tricks to design one’s home aesthetically and Yash Soni, who creates micro sculpture using pencil carvings, explained how art is a medium of expression.
Well-known architect and urbanist, Madhav Raman of Anagram Architects, inspired the AID community with a thought-provoking session on the increasing use of 3D technology. He highlighted the relevance of bots in the world of design, which is ideally restricted to repetitive mechanical jobs. Raman spoke about how artificial intelligence offered solutions like providing archives of matter to be retrieved when required; given the acute shortage of storage space. However, bots fail to substitute for human creativity, which is integral to design.
Commenting on the initiative, Sujit Patil, vice president and head of corporate brand and communications, Godrej Group, said, “Godrej Group has always been at the forefront of creating platforms that foster engagement and collaboration. We are overwhelmed with the response received for our first pop-up event ‘Connections’ by Design Dekko. We launched Design Dekko just earlier this year – and saw a phenomenal response from architects, interior designers and allied communities. Through our series of pop-ups, we aim to bring together the collective wisdom of design enthusiasts and professionals on one platform to cross-pollinate ideas and collectively raise the bar of the industry.”
The initiative was supported by Gyproc India, Godrej Security Solutions, H&R Johnson India, Godrej Locking Solutions & Systems, U&Us, Josh Talks and Godrej Properties. The event encompassed experience zones, master classes, and conversations on how technology is shaping futuristic living spaces. The security zone by Godrej Security Solutions & Godrej Locks showcased world-class security and safety solutions. Godrej Properties presented its initiative called Easy Beginnings, connecting potential home owners with its financing partners such as Axis Bank, and Home Capital. At the U&Us zone, home owners received free consultations from interior designers.
“It's a great experience to associate and participate in curating the property of ‘Design Dekko’, which is a unique platform that celebrates spaces and minds.
