Mitali Bajaj of Dr.Art+Design gets Index Award for Excellence in Hospitality Design from renowned architect Prem Nath

Her design studio’s work on Le Sutra in Mumbai, wins Mitali Bajaj an award

The founder and CEO of Dr.Art+Design, Mitali Bajaj was the proud recipient of the Index Excellence Award for Architecture & Design Space 2019 in the category Excellence in Hospitality Design for Le Sutra - The World’s First Indian Art Hotel. The 16-room boutique residency hotel is nestled in the quiet Mumbai suburb of Khar and exhibits artworks by emerging contemporary artists. The award was presented at the gala awards function, ‘Smoking Hot!’, which was held at the Central Design Atrium of Index at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Goregaon, Mumbai.

An annual international trade fair held in Mumbai, Index is a focused commercial platform on interiors, architecture, materials and design, which brings together suppliers and buyers in a design atmosphere. A pioneer in its segment, this trade fair hosted its 31st edition in Mumbai from May 1st to 4th, 2019. The organisers claim that this edition had over 30,000 architects, designers, builders and procurement teams from India and overseas attending the event. A number of national and global brands exhibited their products, among them Hindware, Canadian Wood and Green Décor, to name just a few. Index recognised talent and landmark achievements amongst leading architects, builders and others in the industry through the IndeXcellence Awards for architects at the exciting ‘Smoking Hot!’ event, which was held on May 3rd this year.

The primary presenter for the evening was the renowned architect Prem Nath, the name behind one of the most iconic buildings adorning Mumbai’s skyline - India’s first revolving restaurant atop the Ambassador Hotel in Marine Drive. Bajaj, the first awardee of the evening, has studied at Ithaca College, Cornell University, Columbia University and London School of Economics. After graduating in Business Management, she went on to work with Goldman Sachs on Wall Street. Living in Manhattan, she fell in love with the world of art and design, which prompted her to study design in Milan and Rome with Istituti Callegari Milano.

Shortly after, Bajaj helped design the art bank for ING Vyasya in Mumbai. Then, she developed an interest in the idea of creating the first Indian Art Hotel along with her family’s hospitality company – now called Le Sutra, which was awarded Most Unique Hotel in India by IHEA. Le Sutra Group of hotels aims to create luxurious spaces that are experiences of Indian mythology and exhibits artworks by emerging artists and designers. The design approach comprises three levels of rooms that represent Gunas which sum up the worldview in Indian philosophy. A total of 120 painters, 40 sculptors and 15 designers collaborated to create this project, a unique concept in the lifestyle hotel space. Bajaj has also designed the aesthetics for the first Trump Towers in Pune. The Andhra Art and Craft hotel in Visakhapatnam is her latest project for her family’s company.

Bajaj decided to set up a co-creative innovation lab for the real estate and hospitality industry, where multiple brains worked on a common idea, giving birth to Dr.Art+Design in 2011. Her studio provides design management to developers, hoteliers, architects & interior designers. They creatively work towards providing an aesthetic touch to lifestyle projects by fusing art, sculpture, lighting, furniture and design into spaces – right from inception to implementation. Bajaj’s lab, which has a number of acclaimed interior design projects to its name, is committed to adding value, reflecting personality, bringing uniqueness and simply converting a 'nice project' to a 'cult project'. Through her work, this young entrepreneur hopes to ensure aesthetics in these projects.
