The IIID Design Excellence Awards finale in Kochi highlighted the cream of India’s design talent

Some of the finest names from the architecture, design and allied fields selected the best interior designers in each category of projects

Raichak on the River Ganges, a few hours away from Kolkata, was the serene setting for a congregation of 20 of the best minds in the fields of architecture, design, art and journalism on December 15th and 16th last year. What brought them together was a joint mission to help chart the path of interior design trends for 2019.

The IIID Design Excellence Awards 2018 had received a staggering 640 entries this time. Like in the previous years, the jury members were selected from the crème of their respective professions – be they artists, writers, product designers, architects, or interior designers.

The IIID Awards Committee headed by Tanuja BK, assisted by Gayathri Shetty and Rahul Dalvi, left no stone unturned in managing the jury meet and playing gracious hosts for IIID’s 21st awards year. President Pratap Jadhav welcomed the gathering and presided over the two intense days.

The committee briefed the jury members about the rules. There were four teams, one for each zone, each fronted by a jury lead and supported by four others. Their task was crucial – so over the next two days, there were discussions, deliberations and debates to ensure they made the right decisions.

The final juries and awards night were held at the Le Meridien in Kochi on March 27th and 28th this year. This round was exciting, as each participant presented their work at the podium. The judgements were passed by two sets of jurors in the presence of a charged audience of NEC members, Chapter/Centre chairpersons, members of the Kerala IIID Chapter and invitees.

After two days of hectic activity over the juries, the Awards night made way for an evening of fun with a hilarious MC, the announcement of the proud winners, a captivating cultural evening of artistic dance performances from Kerala, delicious regional cuisine and a lot of bonhomie and banter. Lastly, a trip to the Kochi Biennale organised by the IIID NEC and a meeting with the founder curator artist Bose Krishnamachari was a special moment.
