Saffronart to host two successive live auctions in New Delhi

The live auctions, to be held at The Oberoi in New Delhi on 12 September, will feature leading modern Indian artists like FN Souza

Saffronart will host two successive live auctions featuring works by some of the most celebrated modern Indian artists on 12 September 2019 at The Oberoi in New Delhi. The Day Sale features works from The Estate of Francis Newton Souza, and is dedicated solely to the artist. The Evening Sale offers masterpieces by VS Gaitonde, Bhupen Khakhar, Ram Kumar, SH Raza and KH Ara among other leading modernists, belonging to prolific periods in the artists’ careers.

The catalogue for the Day Sale comprises 55 lots spanning FN Souza's career, dating from the early 1940s through the late 1990s. It showcases the evolution of Souza’s extensive oeuvre through his drawings and works on paper, chemical alterations, a canvas and mixed media such as an artist’s palette, all of which are supported by a strong provenance and belong to the artist’s estate.

Lot 55 - FN Souza, Untitled, 1998, Estimate - Rs.1.50-2.5 lakh (USD 2,175-3,625). Day Sale, Works from the Estate of FN Souza

The Evening Sale features a strong collection of 68 works by India's modernists and is led by VS Gaitonde’s 'Untitled', 1982 (Lot 12), estimated at Rs.20 - 30 crore (USD 2,898,555 - 4,347,830).  A large never-before-seen work by Bhupen Khakhar titled 'Tradesman', 1986 (Lot 41) estimated at Rs.3.25 - 4.25 crore (USD 471,015 - 615,945), is another highlight of the sale, belonging to a period when Khakhar portrayed the everyman through a complex yet compassionate artistic vocabulary. The oil on canvas painting will come under the hammer for the first time and is a rare and exciting piece for collectors of the visionary artist, who is finally receiving long-overdue recognition. The catalogue also shines a spotlight on eminent artist Ram Kumar, who passed away in April 2018 in New Delhi, featuring six works from pivotal periods in his artistic career. A series of striking and unusual sculptures are also part of the sale.
