Indrajit Kembhavi, Partner at Kembhavi Architecture Foundation, completed his bachelor of Architecture from B.V.B college of Engineering Hubli after which he went for specialization in institutional architecture at Sir J.J. college of Architecture Mumbai. He has worked with architect Gerad da cunha in Goa on a book of Goan residential architecture “Houses of Goa”. He works as a design associate with KAF since 1997. He is also into construction where he is a partner in two reputed firms. His focus is on management systems, design and liason.

THE ZONE AT KOCHI AIRPORT – A Gateway to God’s Own Country
The new retail and F&B zone at the Kochi airport is a unique and exciting project that aims to provide a premium experience to both international and domestic travellers, visiting guests, and the local micro market. Conceived as a gateway to the beautiful state of Kerala, the project has been designed to reflect the region’s vibrant culture, tradition, and ethos.
The design of the project is inspired by the iconic houseboats that are synonymous with Kerala tourism, capturing the essence of the state’s rich heritage and identity. The roof of the retail area has been designed to be an extension of the surrounding landscape, featuring a striking and abstract representation of a houseboat.
The form of the project is contemporary and playful, blending the best of modern design with the traditional elements that embody the spirit of Kerala. The use of sea-shell inspired shapes in the built spaces further reinforces this connection with the natural beauty of the state. The atmosphere of the space is lively and energetic, with a harmonious balance between the contemporary and traditional.

LANDMARK VERTICA
It is a striking and culturally-rooted development located in the heart of Chennai, neighbouring the historic 1,000 lights mosque. In a tribute to this heritage site, the building has been designed with four towering pinnacles, abstractly inspired by the mosque’s iconic minarets.
The use of lighting is central to the design of the building, with intricate and detailed lighting installations adorning both the facade and the spaces within. This not only illuminates the building, but also pays homage to the 1000 lights of the neighbouring mosque, making it a beacon of cultural significance.
The building’s design is rooted in the rich cultural heritage of Chennai, with extensive detailing and use of patterns and motifs inspired by the Chola tradition. This sensitivity to the local context, combined with a focus on creating a visually stunning and meaningful space, makes Landmark Vertica a truly unique and special development.

RESIDENTIAL TOWER FOR ICON HOMZ
A new residential tower, it takes inspiration from the beauty and vitality of nature. The masterplan of the tower has been influenced by the Miyawaki forest, a technique that promotes dense, biodiverse urban forests.
The building is designed to recreate a vertical urban forest, with multiple outdoor decks accommodating trees and vegetation on the façade. The result is a stunning and lush green building that provides residents with a peaceful and rejuvenating environment in the heart of the city.
The design of the tower is also a celebration of the energetic and vibrant spirit of Bengaluru, a city renowned for its cutting-edge technology and innovation. The use of multiple curvilinear forms creates a dynamic and exciting building that reflects the energy and vitality of the city.

CULTURAL CENTER FOR MATA AMRITANANDAMAYI AT MAHABALIPURAM
This design competition entry is the result of an intensive study of Sanatan Dharma, the Vedas, and the teachings of Mata Amritanandamayi. The project is inspired by the concept of ‘Amrita’, the nectar of immortality, which is said to have been created through the mythical event of “Samudra Manthan,” the churning of the ocean by the gods and demons.
The design of the building reflects the churning of the ocean through the visual representation of tidal waves, creating a form that is both powerful and dynamic. At the heart of the building is a towering copper lotus petal, standing at 108m high and representing the celestial serpent “Vasuki.”
This design seamlessly blends elements of the past and the future. The futuristic form of the building rests on a decorative plinth inspired by the architecture of Mahabalipuram, creating a connection to cultural continuity and the ancientness of the discipline. The result is a building that is both innovative and rooted in tradition, reflecting the journey of Sanatan Dharma across generations.

TWIN TOWER
The government has a vision to optimise a prime commercial site through the construction of ultra-modern office space. The objective is to create a financially sustainable model that balances self-use and tenant space.
To meet this goal, a unique design concept was proposed – two 50-story tall towers, shaped like the petals of a flower. This design seamlessly blends efficiency and aesthetics, creating a visually stunning building that is both practical and functional.
The design of the Twin Towers is focused on incorporating cutting-edge technology and promoting carbon zero efficiency. The futuristic façade of the building symbolizes the technological vibe of the city, showcasing its commitment to innovation and sustainability.

BHIMA CORPORATE OFFICE:
The corporate office of one of India’s top jewellery retail brands was designed with inspiration from the form of an uncut diamond. The aim was to create a space that reflects the brand’s luxurious image, while also exuding a sense of sophistication and restraint.
The design of the office showcases a blend of neo-modern and art deco styles, combining contemporary elements with a touch of vintage elegance. The material usage was opulent and fitting for the brand’s image, reflecting the brand’s commitment to quality and luxury.
