House of Sōhn with artist Oona D’mello to launch Est. Form, a collaboration between art and fashion
From canvas paintings to wearable art, the one-day exhbition on December 14th will present the two mediums as a response to each other as well as a unique proposition of a new form
Breaking the norms separating art and fashion, artist Oona D’mello and fashion label House of Sōhn have joined forces to present a cross-disciplinary collaboration titled 'Est. Form'. A one-day exhibition to be held in Mumbai on December 14, 2019, Est. Form will integrate the two disciplines through a series of awe-inspiring creations.
The collaboration grew organically between the two friends – D'mello, a visual artist practising globally and currently based in Mumbai; and Sohni Patel, the founder and head designer of House of Sōhn. While D'mello’s art visually serves as a free-flowing interaction of colour and movement, inspired through experience and memory, Patel designs clothes with clean cuts and neutral palettes reflecting unrestricted femininity and emotions through texture and form. Although they belong to separate disciplines, an instinctive and experiential drive led them to team up for this exhbition.
'Est. Form Edition I' blends the broader construct of fashion and art, presenting the two mediums as a response to each other as well as a unique proposition of a new form that defies categorisation. Their collaboration results in a work that is realised both on canvas and off canvas (onto cloth). The duo will be creating and presenting a combination of canvas paintings and interactive installations styled as skins - an existing part of D'mello's signature fabric alteration artworks; along with a selection of House of Sōhn pieces developed as responses to the paintings, and wearable art that stands as a melting pot for both practices.
Speaking from her studio in Mumbai, D'mello highlighted, "Est. Form is where creativity is free and form is boundless. It addresses how art is consumed and facilitates an unapologetic dialogue on collaboration, conversation and creation. Edition I is intentionally meant to be radical and uncommon. Here, art is no longer restricted to a white wall and fashion engages equally as a vital form of expression.” Co-creator Patel added: “We hope that the freedom embodied by Est. Form will encourage reflection and growth; a culture of co-creation and innovation that inevitably encourages society to progress. Edition I is the first step of many towards this goal.”
As a prelude to the exhibition, Est. Form will be hosting the upcoming Fashion For Brunch at Soho House, Mumbai, on December 7, 2019. The event will set the foundation for the exhibition's launch and will involve a presentation and conversation with the founders, moderated by Cecilia Oldne. The event will also preview an installation-style artwork.

About Sohni Patel | House of Sōhn
After getting a degree in Psychology and Business, Sohni Patel followed her passion for art and design that took her to Paris where she worked as a forecast and trend consultant anticipating change and building innovative strategies for fashion, luxury and art. Following a series of immersive courses in art history in Paris and fashion design at Parsons, The New School of Design in New York and the London College of Fashion in London, Patel found her hands-on training at the ateliers of Nanette Lepore, Marchesa and Duro Olowu in New York. Armed with this experience, Patel returned to Mumbai in 2015, where she founded House of Sōhn – a contemporary women’s label created to tell inspiring stories about women, art and culture through the medium of fabric. Her work stands apart as an intelligent response to the zeitgeist, moving beyond the traditional categories to create new conversations.
