There has been a shift in the mind sets of people as well as designers regarding wood flooring. They are finally open to experimenting not only with patterns, but also with shades. There are a range of exciting and impressive patterns available, where one can play around mixing wood and metal, adding in-lays, going rustic with deeply brushed planks, geometric patterns and much more. Let’s take a look at some popular wood flooring patterns.
Herringbone
Herringbone flooring is the most popular form of parquet and it is a pattern which has been around for centuries. 2500 years ago Romans engineers found that its crisscrossing arrangement provided the optimum structure for their roads. Herringbone wood flooring is made from relatively small rectangular blocks of hardwood laid in a pattern which resembles the skeleton of a fish – specifically a herring – and from which it derives its name.
It is the most popular of the parquet patterns and is on trend in both domestic and commercial installations. Traditionally herringbone flooring blocks were made from solid wood and were relatively small, but modern methods allow us to offer a stunning range of shades, finishes and sizes right up to 600mm long, providing a really contemporary take on what is a very traditional patterned floor.
Chevron
The chevron pattern appears in some of the earliest art forms, including on pottery and rock carvings. It is a key element in heraldry, used as an insignia of rank by military worldwide, and is popular in textiles, being most closely associated with the Italian fashion house Missoni. Havwoods offer a wide range of pre-finished blocks which are quicker and easier to install than traditional unfinished solid wood blocks, and our latest products provide a chevron pattern ready laid in an engineered plank, 1672mm long by 305mm wide – the quickest and easiest installation yet.
Versailles
The Versailles pattern is a flooring design classic. Versailles pattern was created to help transform a humble hunting lodge into the famous Chateau de Versailles for Louis XVI. Owing its name to the fabulous Palace de Versailles, one of the world’s great building projects where intricately patterned wooden floors replaced the old marble ones, the Versailles design consists of squares held together by what appears to be an interwoven mesh of wood strips, all within a wood frame. Havwoods Gord pattern is also supplied pre-assembled and pre-finished. This is a simpler design than the Versailles pattern and presents a strong graphic visual. All are rustic grade panels which have been brushed for an antiqued appearance. As an exciting expansion of this collection of easy-to-install, stunningly patterned wood flooring, Havwoods also offers a variety of pre-assembled, pre-finished patterned panels in reclaimed oak.
Parquet
Parquet flooring is where individual pieces or blocks of wood are fitted together to form a patterned floor. Usually, but not necessarily, these patterns are geometric in shape, and the most popular of them are created using four-sided blocks. The best known patterns are chevron and herringbone, although basket weave, Flanders weave or brick patterns in both stack bond or stretcher bond are also absolutely stunning, and the classic pattern know as Versailles is once again becoming popular. The complexity of installation meant that parquet flooring was traditionally a sign of wealth, but modern milling methods now make it a truly beautiful option open to all.
