Located in the outskirts of Ahmedabad, VS House was originally a four bedroom house built around seven years ago. Saransh was commissioned to retrofit the space into a three bedroom abode to incorporate the client’s new requirements.
The existing house was stripped of its finishes and redesigned from scratch. A higher boundary wall now conceals the services within, and the house enjoys an expansive parking space. The corner spaces were repurposed to include an independent gym and a jacuzzi spa. The study, an extension on the first floor, was originally a large passage extending into a terrace. Its repurposed roof with a curved ceiling opens up to the morning light. The aim was to create a den-like ambience, isolated from the rest of the house.
The material palette forms an intriguing visual and tactile journey through the house, with the flooring playing a key role in the design narrative. Walls and ceilings in grey keep the tones monochromatic while making the wooden furniture pop out. A majority of the wood used in the project is reclaimed and the walls are all finished with a lime wash. The entire palette was chosen keeping locally available materials in mind.
Saransh, an architecture firm based in Ahmedabad, believes that good design is generated from strong concepts that evolve as a response to various factors. The manifestation of the summation of these ideas is what drives design, across diverse typologies at the firm.
