ivpartners have visualised and designed the stunning 40,000sq-ft ICON Cinema located in Goregaon, Mumbai with a scintillating sense of style. Situated on the third floor of the Oberoi Mall, this multiplex is a beautiful example of form and function creating a seamless whole. The client wanted this prominent facility to be rejuvenated and brought alive, creating a strong signature statement that would be iconic. Also, the existing cinema was to get updated with new features and functions for a contemporary experience. The design concept was derived from magnetic line vectors that create a powerful and dynamic force field.

The strips on the floor, counter and ceiling convey the core concept of a magnetic force field.

Incorporating the idea of reinvention, the experience of the multiplex begins at a pre-function area which encompasses a showstopping suspension chandelier fabricated in glass tubes and brass elements. It is followed by a branding portal configured with a large seamless LED, playing dynamic media and movie promotions. Within this pre-function, are hosted the ticket, e-ticket and information kiosks. The main ticket box features a reception desk-like counter with a marble bulkhead and LED displays above. The core concept of a magnetic line field is articulated as dark brown and light beige Italian marble ‘planks’, on the counter front and flooring.

The pattern continues as a staggered ribbon line geometry flowing from the counters, and enveloping the overall ceiling — which features varied lighting elements including soft and indirect amber architectural lighting, strip lighting and LED-based coves. The luxe aesthetic continues with the use of golden mirrors and high-gloss brass with wood laminate finish.

The double-height concession stand.

A centrally located island functions as the concession stand, displaying delectable fare and multiple F&B configurations. Cream marble counters are set aglow by soft cove lighting, while a barcode-style etched brass pattern on the backdrop heightens the style quotient.

Although the theatre underwent an enormous restructuring to create a new way of interaction and display, the attempt was also to establish a multiplex experience, bringing together the contemporary trends, while adapting to the cultural and sub-cultural contexts of our society.Â
