Chromed Design Studio designs three outlets for Chicago's acclaimed Uno’s Pizzeria in India
While the vibe of a Chicago bistro is the common denominator, the three establishments are distinguished by varying -- and striking -- design elements
Founded in 1943 by friends Ike Sewell and Ric Riccardo in a Chicago neighbourhood, Uno’s Pizzeria prides itself for delivering superior pizza and bar food. With a flourishing and thriving global presence, Uno’s Pizzeria entered the Indian market with vigour in three locations — Delhi NCR, Kolkata and Bengaluru. All three outlets have been designed by Chromed Design Studio.
The core ideology behind the design of the three outlets was to recreate the feel of having pizza in a quintessential Chicago bistro with a cosy vibe -- somewhere between a fine dine restaurant and a casual bar. The team Chromed articulated this theme using warm colours and varying design elements that would stay within the prescribed format yet give each outlets its own personality.
Uno’s Garden Galleria, Noida, is carefully divided into two zones for indoor and outdoor dining to suit the preferences of all types of customers. Long curved glazing panels facilitate the physical partitioning of the two sections while consistently connecting them visually. Elements like wainscoting wall panels and a bright colour palette of blue and red render a warm feel. A clever use of tin tiles on the bar helps in highlighting the section.
The ornamental Tiffany lamps add a certain bling and old-world charm to the space, while black and white marble pattern flooring with brass inlay weave in a royal touch. Structural columns have been turned from eyesores to design highlights by dressing them with mirror strips -- which spread natural light and create a beautiful deception of reflections. The timeline graphic on the curved wall along the passage is one of the highlighting features of the project.
The Bengaluru establishment is divided into three zones: two indoor dining areas and an outdoor section which is divided by the DJ area. With a 6m-wide entrance in middle of the famous mall, the outlet enjoys a distinct entrance aisle with seating on both sides. The placement of the DJ and the bar has been formulated in a fashion that gives special prominence to the sections. Since the theme in all the franchises is based on a consistent look and feel of English architecture, the colour palette has been maintained at bright blue and red along with the use of wainscoting panels on walls that add warmth to the space. The bold bulb letters and aeroplane on the ceiling add a bijou aesthetic to the space. A loud Chicago graphic brightens the outdoor space and provides an overall connection and recall to the theme. The planter wall adds greens to the space.
The third branch of the acclaimed chain of restaurants is Uno’s Swabhumi, located in Salt Lake in Kolkata. This outlet has minute differences as the design incorporates Indian elements in form of local materials, exposed brick walls, mosaic flooring, wood, etc. with a touch of greenery. Attractive large span bars add a bling to the space. Very similar to the other two outlets, tin tiles have been used for showcasing the essential space. The outdoor area has a big graffiti running across the main wall. Apart from the standard colour palette, ornamental lighting fixtures, wainscoting panels and the black and white marble pattern with gold inlays, this outlet also features wrought iron elements all over the façade and outdoors, adding a traditional feel to this restaurant.
