Punam Kalra designs luxury villa for Omaxe Group

The engineer-turned-designer creates a minilaist, contemporary space featuring an adventurous play of materials, textures and details

Located in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, a luxury villa by the Omaxe group gave Punam Kalra a perfectly blank canvas to be reimagined as an extremely minimal, contemporary space. Her underlying approach was creating a young and dynamic space with a design language that is playful and familiar, while also having a bold streak of personality.

Kalra takes inspiration from the neat precision of industrial design to create chic, artistic and timeless pieces of work. Her constant endeavor has been to fuse various materials, finishes, technology, and traditional handicraft to create interesting outcomes. Her work exudes luxury and a sense of innovation. She believes in forging ahead in time, intuitively predicting and creating unparalleled pieces of furniture that resonate with the innate desires of the clientele.

Similarly, this project is her eclectic take on modern minimalism and subtle design with detailing in clean, straight lines to create stunning experiences. The fundamental colour palette used in the interior is an alluring mix of crisp whites and greys, enhanced by bold-colored accents in a nimble assortments of textures. The functional yet sculptural detailing of each space gives the home a strong design character, depth, and integrity.

The suave formal sitting area with a black sofa in plush fabrics and contemporary wooden arm details, a minimal white tufted chaise, white PU, acrylic solid surfaces and enameled glass center table with neat black, grey and powder blue details, a monochrome carpet with inconspicuous colour highlights and a complementing tree-inspired organic metallic wall installation make for an inviting, ultra-modern space.

The grey wall in the casual entertaining zone makes a perfect backdrop for a minibar with complementing white counter details and bold red bar stools. The neutral-toned sofa with a blue highlight, the colourful geometric carpet along with the minimal, chic coffee tables molded-in steel, the delicate sculptural chandelier, and the organic floral wall installations give the space a refreshing simplicity and modern vibe. The dining table is a piece of art, handcrafted out of an abstract piece of reclaimed wood along with elegantly curved steel legs. The colorful geometric carpet and sleek white chairs perfectly complement the table with similar leg details to create a dining area with a restrained indulgence.

The deluxe white sofa with the green, blue backdrop and reclaimed wood coffee table with steel leg detailing makes for a good semi-private living zone while also giving a visual buffer from the atrium bar below. A muted touch of gold along with the nifty detailing adds a sense of sophistication and metallic glamour.

The white upholstered bed, with a rich tufted headboard, is an understated sculptural play of silhouettes with a minute size variation among the base and the mattress, the wooden leg detailing, and the slightly curvilinear form of the coffee tables with a wooden framed glass top giving the furniture a soft feeling. The grey chaise with jewel-toned pillows and white leg details, monochrome striped wallpaper, and the striped carpet in contrasting colours with uneven edge detailing bring an edgy, urbane calmness to the master bedroom.

An interpretation of Zen and modern tranquility with a low floor, the guest bedroom features rough-cut wooden planked bed that lends a warm and friendly vibe. The comfortable floor chairs and the coffee table crafted in wood with a coloured accent are an extension of this raw, organic, serene language. The mod white coffee table in acrylic surfaces with wooden inlays further radiates the comfort of a natural sense of luxury.

The low floor wooden bed and the quirky headboard with white geometric detailing in the other bedroom is contrasted with an asymmetric orange tree-shaped shelf and matching orange cushions that add a fun to the space. A couture gown inspired, dreamy scalloped bed in deep burgundy creates an exquisite, whimsical decor in the daughter’s bedroom, thus reflecting Kalra’s philosophy of design being a way of life.
