#AIExclusive: A bijou apartment in Bengaluru’s first residential complex gets a fresh makeover

This 4 BHK project is designed by Amber Collective and is snugly nestled amidst mature Champak trees in one of Bangalore’s earliest planned residential layouts.

Having lived here for nearly 47 years, the clients got us on board to freshen up their home by combining the neighbouring 2 BHK unit with their existing 2 BHK. Accustomed to the locality, lifestyle and apartment community, home for the clients truly could be nowhere else.

Fresh flair

Our renovation and interior strategy had to be in tandem with the structure of the apartment. Although no drawings were found for the building, grooves in wall plastering worked as perfect clues to figure out the structure. What ensued was a complete revamp of the 2 apartments into a fully functional 4 bedroom home replete with a study. Crafted for a family of 4, the layout strives to provide quiet corners for each of the family member within the existing egalitarian floor plan. The overall design language does not conform to a particular style but yearns to be a bijou home in years to come.

Calm nest

The unassuming door opens into a foyer with a niche created for the client’s artworks. The jute wallpaper within the niche, establishes the tone of the home. 2 living rooms are combined to create a spacious living cum dining with 2 balconies opening into the Champak tree avenue. The muted colour palette is accentuated by a large custom artwork and loose furniture. Floor to ceiling curtains create the illusion of additional height in an otherwise linear living room. A polished wooden ceiling portion in the living area adds warmth and provides a sense of movement.

The open kitchen and free flow of space facilitates the family to host guests for meals and occasions. Warm tones of quartz and light teal polymer wrapped base cabinets add liveliness to the comfortably sized kitchen. The white coloured overhead cabinets and loft provide visual height within the kitchen.  The living cum dining opens onto 2 bedrooms on either side with a scaled down vestibule which houses the Pooja room. A comfortable fabric lounger in front of the Pooja room creates a calm nest to read and relax.

Characteristic colours

The Master bedroom is kept functional and cosy with existing niches being used for storage. The dressing mirror is positioned as a gentle feature on the wall of muted frames. The position and size of existing windows prompted the addition of a ledge behind the headboard for additional utility. The son’s room is designed to remain relevant as he steps into adulthood with quiet blues and brown accents. Wide spaced fluting on the wall becomes the backdrop for posters and artworks. The faux leather headboard sits as a visual contrast to the wallpaper by Asian paints. The brother’s room is composed with a grey palette in mind. The neutral grey is offset by warm wooden flooring and a large mirror on the wardrobe. The wooden ledge above the headboard houses a reading light and becomes an impromptu bookshelf.

The guest room is made vibrant by mediating the existing veneer wardrobe with hues of greens and beige paint for the walls. A day bed opens out to accommodate guests which otherwise functions as a quiet seater by the window. The existing niche in the wall is altered to function as a display unit and storage. The secondary kitchen is converted to a study and box room. Wooden flooring and wall fluting create the perfect ambience to read a book or converse with a friend. The fabric wallpaper and an assemblage of round mirrors add visual interest in this room. The interior language also facilitates this space to be used as an extension of the living room

All bathrooms are redone with functional storage through lofts and under counter cabinets. Tiles from Trove and ceilings from VOX add flair into the compact bathrooms. Through the tactful use of plants and luminaires, all areas have been infused with warmth and a sense of freshness. This renovated home will aid the family to live comfortable and grow for years to come, all within the comfort of a familiar neighbourhood and a lifestyle that is typical of old Bangalore.
