#AIExclusive: This New Delhi home intuitively blends art and colour

Ar. Suraj Mittal of Future Concepts brings a contemporary style that bears roots in vintage flourishes to the fore, for a subtle yet lively design that sings of cosy comfort!

An artistic endeavour

Seamlessly, the designers transform this New Delhi home into a celebration of the mid-century. Principal architect Suraj Mittal and his partner Nishant Nagpal share a passion for art, which they poured into their vision for interior palettes. Every space in the three-bedroom home is anchored by artwork, enhanced by a play of colour, and interlaced with textural details. Gentle lines and soft curves weave through the visual landscape, while suede upholstery soothes the textural palette. The result is a striking modern vintage style home that looks far bigger than its 1760 sq ft carpet area, soothed by the contours of contemporary minimalism, and sprinkled with surprises around every turn.

Defining modern-vintage

Subtle yet appealing, the design here finds inspiration in intricate and exquisite detailing that existed on furniture dating back nearly 40 years, that occupies nooks of the room. The living sports a modern-classical fusion of styles. The palette here is anchored with custom-created artwork in tones of orange and blue. A set of heirloom sofas and armchairs, reupholstered in the same tones of suede, root the space in the nostalgia of the mid-century. A custom-designed centre table, accented with brass, perfectly balances the sleek lines and the distressed silver finish of an elegant console at the far end of the room, while botanical printed wallpaper in tones of blue and copper offer a rich backdrop to the assemblage.

Luxury in materiality

A masterful structural intervention allows the living room to segue seamlessly into the dining area, where curvilinear forms interplay with varying tones of ochre. A circular dining table in wood and stone, enhanced by accents of brass is gently offset by a rounded brass-mesh chandelier. The curvature of the dining chairs, upholstered in a vibrant shade of ochre, enhances the curvilinear motif. Suede-like leatherette on the dining chair backs allows for easy maintenance while ensuring the fabric cladding remains seamless and soothing to the touch. Colours break the monotony of spaces, with bright hues lending a distinctive character to each area while the art only uplifts it further.

Crafting individualized bedrooms

The palette softens in the earth-toned master bedroom, where fabric-finish wallpaper softens the textural landscape, and a scalloped coral bed back brings a glimmer of opulent comfort. A sense of whimsy sparkles through the daughter’s room, where all her favourite colours drape over the soft wall furnishings and pieces of decor. In the parents’ room, custom-created artwork anchors the visual narrative, while soft colours and muted tones interlace to create a nurturing and uplifting space. The distressed finish on the furniture peppering the spaces remains a favourite of the designer.

“Our design philosophy works on the principles of authenticity and originality, and we believe that incorporating artwork brings soul to a designed space. As a practice, we aspire to create affordable luxury for people from all walks of life while holding a fine balance between technology and tradition,” says Suraj Mittal, Founder and Principal Architect of Future Concepts.
