An opulent approach for luxury living
Every homeowner wishes for an abode that reflects their personality—how this wish is to materialise is the designer’s vocation. So when a family from South Africa approached Gangwal PMC with a vision for their home to reflect their personalities, they joined forces with designer Priyamvada Shah Khuteta to translate the concept into a piece of art. Khuteta’s venture, Top Storey by Pri, specialises in luxury living and space design, and her expertise with eclectic interiors shapes the client’s vision into reality. The home took a better part of 2 years, from planning to execution. The discussions and concept were finalised pre-pandemic, but the work only resumed in 2022 and was completed in 4 months.
Connecting with history
Located in the historical city of Jaipur, this 2825 sq ft apartment is packed with a strong sense of nostalgia. In line with the client’s fondness for the era of the 1960s, the space exhibits a warm-coloured ambience with just the right pops of colours throughout. Being a family of 3 with a 4-year-old daughter, the brief also expressed the need for the design to be child-friendly.
Monochromatic softness
The space sets a tone from the start — a colour palette in egg-white with tones of peach, blues and tinges of gold suffuses grandeur in each room. The monochromatic, houndstooth-patterned upholstery weaves through the entire apartment, adding to the narrative of retro nostalgia. Organically shaped furniture with soft rounded edges maintains the apartment’s child-friendliness and is custom designed in-house. As a welcome to the space, the gold-tinged living room pleasantly engages the viewer with its muted yet rich scheme. Plush furniture in burnt orange and blue pair well with the black-and-white upholstery, and the focal mirror panel in the backdrop reflects just enough light to create an illusion of a light and airy living room.
A bold flourish
Conceived as a one-of-a-kind artwork, the guest room exhibits bold language through its unique headboard. Flanked on both ends with mirrors and brown notched screens, the panel started as a conceptual, bold creative that the room revolves around. The result is a unique statement in various tones of blue and peach leather, complemented by the muted golden ambience of the room.
Whimsy and flamboyance
The master bedroom reflects the flamboyance of its residents through its varied gold tones in glossy, matte and champagnes. The retro blue furniture and a blue pillar coat hanger blend well with the brown houndstooth upholstery, coalescing into a delicate balance of luxury and tranquillity. The homeowners’ 4-year-old daughter wanted her room in pink and lilac, and her room is a reflection of the little girl’s taste that harbours her favourite travel collectables. The customised curtains follow the bright tones in an ombre, thus converging into an aura that is exquisite yet elegant.
As one soaks in the details of whimsically simple decor, the focus lies on the process that masterfully puts together a muted colour palette with extravagant tones and bespoke craftsmanship. The apartment is a study in balancing opulent design sensibilities with serenity, fostering solid connections to the bold life of the 1960s.
