The project began with the transformation of two separate commercial units into a unified, cohesive space, which not only optimized the area but also introduced a natural progression and hierarchy throughout the clinic. Strategic use of window facades was integral, positioning them in key areas like patient-centric rooms to enhance natural light and views.
Pleasing and playful
The clinic’s client, embarking on her inaugural venture into multispecialty dentistry, sought a space that balanced functionality with comfort. Her vision encompassed a warm, welcoming environment designed to put patients at ease and create a homely atmosphere.
The design team diverged from the conventional sterile aesthetic commonly associated with dental clinics. Instead, they aspired to create a functional yet aesthetically pleasing environment that enriches the patient experience. The design was characterized by the use of playful arches and curves, harmonizing with the material mood board to impart a sense of softness and visual appeal.
Renovation of the commercial space involved significant modifications: the internal wall connecting the two units was removed to create a blank canvas, two existing bathrooms were closed off, and a new personal bathroom and pantry were constructed. Additionally, the main entry was reconfigured to align with the new layout.
Comfort comes first
Upon entering the clinic, visitors are greeted by a spacious reception area designed to exude warmth and comfort. This area serves as a relaxing waiting space, with a clear sightline extending through the clinic to facilitate a seamless flow. A small window offers a glimpse into the X-ray room, while glass doors with signage provide visual connectivity between different sections, fostering an inviting and cohesive atmosphere. A compact pantry is also discreetly positioned in the waiting area.
The doctor’s consultation room, conveniently located adjacent to the waiting area, is designed to keep the practitioner as the focal point. The adjoining recovery room, featuring a sliding door, offers flexibility by allowing an extension of the consultation space while maintaining patient accessibility to the doctor.
Opposite the recovery room lies the X-ray room, outfitted with advanced technology to uphold high standards of safety and accuracy. An arched passageway, finished with wooden grooved paneling, leads to the operatory rooms. These rooms prioritize patient comfort, with dental chairs strategically placed for optimal views and floor-to-ceiling glass frontages enhancing the inviting atmosphere.
The balancing game
The design of the clinic is a study in aesthetic and functional balance. The material palette was carefully selected to ensure ease of maintenance while integrating textures and colors that create an inviting environment. A contemporary neutral style is achieved through a blend of warm oak woods, beige, gray, and black accents, with light gray flooring and off-white walls establishing a clean and welcoming appearance. Wood storage panels add both style and practicality, while strategically placed green highlights inject warmth and interest into the design.
One of the significant challenges in this project was harmonizing technical requirements with the design vision. It was crucial to incorporate necessary technical services and state-of-the-art equipment while optimizing space and crafting a unique, welcoming experience for patients.
The passageway, a central feature of the design, connects various areas and stands as a focal point. Its arched ceiling, finished with wooden grooved paneling, transitions into an intriguing wall panel, with green shades adding a bold touch of warmth. Opposite, doors with diverse signage lead to the clinic’s extended areas, making the passageway both a functional connector and a source of visual inspiration.
The project underscores the importance of balance—whether in color, texture, or coordination between different agencies involved. Achieving success required a harmonious integration of all elements.
The design team’s engagement with curves—integrating them with straight lines—highlighted a preferred approach. Curves contribute a dynamic sense of movement and flow, contrasting with straight lines to create visually striking elements, enhancing the overall clinic design.
