“To say life in Bombay is fast-paced and feels like a rat race is an understatement. We wanted our home to be a sanctuary to escape into,” remarks the client. Closely working to meet the family’s requirements, Kruti has enriched this compact Bombay apartment with a sense of space and personalisation. With no entrance foyer, the apartment opens directly unto an L-shaped living area with a dining area to its left and a balcony upfront, bringing cool breezes and abundant natural light.
Timeless and textural
The modern and relaxed personalities of the homeowners informed Kruti’s decision to use soft whites, greys, and pastels, underlined by brass accents and stained wood. A deep grey titanium marble forms a unifying canvas across the apartment. She used a projector instead of a television to conserve space, so while entertaining or curling up to watch a movie, moments are shaped by timeless palettes, gauzy curtains which play with the breeze, and the textural play of marbled stone and tropical planting.
A salmon-pink bench was fixed unto the wall, and dining chairs gathered around a lozenge-shaped marble dining table. Meticulously considered layouts and custom-designed proportioned furniture provide a welcoming spaciousness and flow throughout the apartment.
Peaceful retreat
Modern and functional, the kitchen is designed to store away all its gadgets. While wood tones characterise the lower cabinets, the upper cabinets are highlighted in blush-pink tones.
The bedrooms are located at the rear end of the flat, intercepted by a long corridor. Each room leaned into the personality of its inhabitant. The master suite expresses a dedication to peaceful rituals, and comfort, through a design language that reflects simplicity and lighter tones. A softly-curved grey-green upholstered bed rests against a panelled wall lined with framed botanicals. The hero of this bedroom, however, is a custom-designed study and dresser. Yellow-toned wardrobe doors add warmth to the space and conceal the door leading to the bath — a monotone white-grey marbled bath accented with matt black accessories. A fluted marble niche for storing utilities and decor adds textural interest.
Distinguished designing
Kruti designed a space for their mother with traditional elements. Mint green and beige tones punctuate a comprehensive bed-cum-nightstand system with a rattan headboard. The bath leans into the feminine palette and is clad with blush-toned tiles, accented with brushed bronze Kohler fittings. The den is distinguished from the rest of the apartment with its chevron-pattered oakwood flooring. A grey-white library unit and wide tangerine sofa rest against a floral wallpaper. A long desk allows the den to double up as a home office.
Efficient planning, cleverly concealed storage, and a soft palette were used as devices to create the feeling of ample space. Kruti also evoked feelings of calm and comfort through crafted moments, a subdued palette and tactile materials that follow you throughout each room.
