During the discussions with the client the designers realized that this space would be used as a second home, and more for recreation and entertaining. So they set out to create spaces that exude a relaxed atmosphere and laidback luxury. A clean, neutral base is peppered with colourful artworks, interesting shapes and silhouettes of the furniture pieces and modern lights.
Connected to context
The carpet area of the apartment is 3,150 sq ft It’s a penthouse located at the INIA project on the EM Bypass, Kolkata. The layout of this apartment was finalised at an early stage of construction of the building, thus there were no structural changes required.Â
This penthouse is the only apartment on that floor, hence the lift lobby seems private. Once you enter the house, on the left hand side, there is a large living space and right ahead is a large bar area followed by the dining room and an open-to-the-sky terrace.
Connected to the bar and the dining room is the kitchen, a services lobby and a powder room.
On the opposite side of the living room there’s a passage that connects to the three bedrooms – a kids’ room, a guest room and then the master bedroom suite.
The master bedroom is quite large, and also has a walk-in closet. The bedrooms are furnished with modern, straight-line furniture in neutral shades.
Avant-garde aesthetics
The theme is modern, evoking Manhattan-style clean, sophisticated environments. We have stuck to this sensibility through out. However, we have experimented with the selection of art and some furniture pieces that we curated for this project.Â
By keeping the base colour palette a neutral grey, we have introduced bright shades with artworks, upholstery, tapestry, and lights. The material palette comprises natural stones, dark tones of walnut and oak used for furniture, velvets, metal, glass, etc.
Getting the green signal
The INIA project itself is a green building. The lighting and temperature are controlled by automation, thus the lighting is tuned to adjust with the natural light inflow. Also, the large windows keep every corner of the home illuminated through the day, cutting down on the usage of electricity.Â
