Hot Metal: A Surat office that is minimal in design and exaggerated in colour

Designed by Jons Savalia and Disha Patel of the Vimmu Design Studio, this workspace for a textile company is a modern interpretation of an office that embodies a minimalist approach disrupted with bright, vibrant design elements.

Brimming with colour

Stemming from the brand that the office was crafted for – Sangini Textiles, the concept for the space evolved around colour. Textiles come in a wide range of hues and in an effort to capture that, the office finds itself hosting a multitude of vibrant shades. “We wanted to create an enclosure where the clients of the company can feel vibrant and yet at home,” decribes the designer. Bright yellow anchors a lively red, while more muted shades of teal and blue also play accent.

Quirky connections

These colour-filled elements travel, snaking and criss-crossing across the spaces. The adorn the walls and floors, and the design ensures that every space is visually connected to this language of colours. The teal members highlight the structural build of the ceiling, which hosts a mezzanine opening into the waiting area, connecting across volumes, Under this framework of teal, furnishing in red take centre-stage. The starkly contemporary silhouettes of the furniture is composed entirely of metal plates, and is almost industrial in its raw, functional appeal. Yet the bright colours give it a playful edge. A quirky yellow staircase, reminiscent of a playground, bridges the floors.

Textural depth and material play

In order to let the colours sing, the design maintains a neutral backdrop that is toned down. This provides a fitting backdrop for the colourful accent pieces and for textural interplay to shine through. A terrazzo flooring, echoing old Indian homes, grounds the spaces, acting as the common visual tread that connects the office. This orchestrates a play of old and new, while adding a rawness to the overall space. Unpolished walls further this narrative of the raw. Textured glass separates zones, allowing diffused light to filter into the compact space through the day.

This office is all about creating a rich experiential quality that serves its users with extravagance and tranquility, thus serving as a perfect anecdote of a loud yet muted collective.
