#AIExclusive: Ind Cafe – A compact 40-sq ft strikingly contemporary coffee shop

From obviously offbeat shapes to sleek minimalism that one simply cannot take their eyes off of, there are infinite forms to memorable design. The ‘Ind Cafe Kiosk’ in Chennai, designed by AWOL Design Studio is definitely one of them.

Visually striking and functionally indisputable, this tiny booth showcases AWOL’s ability to decode the context and use it to their advantage.

Situated adjacent to an intersection in a well-to-do neighbourhood near the Boat Club in Chennai, the facade of this kiosk is sure to draw everyone in irrespective of the direction in which they are travelling. The glass facade that displays all the equipment artfully stowed into designated spaces helps build intrigue. But it is definitely the clever use of colour that steals the show.

Decided upon after a study of all the coffee shops in the area, the neon-tinged orange offers a contrast to everything around it. The clever use of bright white and a deep black for the signage and menu adds to the starkness of the predominant colour. And the cherry on top, that somehow also ties everything together – the retro font.

Exemplary planning for a tiny space

However, it isn’t just the exterior that is impressive. AWOL has strategically created and assigned space in the 40 sq ft booth for an assortment of equipment including a coffee machine, a microwave, a fridge, a bakery unit, 3 boilers AND an induction stove – all of this, in addition to providing space for 2 people to work.

This truly unique and innovative café kiosk is a aesthetically stunning lesson on going mini!
