Reel in the power of red at this energetic Chennai home

For the design of this Chennai abode, Vandana Priyadarshini and Rahul Vignesh, the principal architects and co-founders of RVDA, worked within a primarily neutral shell, punctured with bold, powerful hues of Crimson that have been strategically introduced to energise and uplift the space.

“Within this ostensibly traditional and subdued backdrop of grey walls and white flooring, an uncommon shade of crimson sporadically emerges into the space, akin to a mesmerising lava flow amidst an otherwise monotonous earthy terrain, serving as a prominent focal point of the residence,” Priyadarshini.

The client’s primary requirement for this project was to create a spacious, well-lit layout while minimising structural changes. They also emphasised the importance of infusing an Indian-grounded aura into the overall design.

Strategic solutions

One of the significant challenges encountered during the project was the restrictions imposed by the gated community regarding the exterior walls of the flat that were creatively problem-solved to ensure the design aligned with both the client’s vision and the community guidelines. Windows were widened where necessary to enhance the illumination and ventilation of specific spaces. Additionally, a few walls were broken down to create a hidden entry for one of the bedrooms, improving the overall flow and functionality of the flat.

The 1,600 sq ft apartment has three bedrooms with ensuites, a living room, a dining area, a Pooja room, and a kitchen. The main door opens into a well-lit living room, which serves as the central hub of the apartment. On one end of this area is the master bedroom, while the hallway leads to the dining area, the two additional bedrooms, the Pooja room, and the kitchen on the other end.

Eye-catching aesthetics

As one enters the living room, a bold crimson custom sofa and panelled TV unit catch the eye. The unit features integrated wooden panels across the home to visually connect spaces while promoting integration and connectivity. Black contemporary tables juxtapose the same, resulting in a harmonious balance of colours. A neutral palette has been employed, complemented by wood, brass, fluted glass, stucco, and fabric materials to achieve the desired Indian aesthetic. Crimson touches, and artworks have been integrated across the design grammar, inspired to energise the space while imbuing warmth harmoniously.

A corridor leads to the dining area, which exudes an old-world charm with black cane-back chairs and a custom dining table. Though the site has a primarily neutral shell, tactility via wooden surfaces, panelling and earthy elements in varying proportions create a cohesive scheme. Adjacent to the table is the pooja unit hidden behind a perforated panel to ensure ventilation. Touches of auspicious Crimson in the panelling make a cosy spiritual sanctum. Dark blue and wooden cabinetry describe the kitchen, breaking the monotony of the red colourways. The kitchen has been designed as a functional space with clean-lined furniture and plenty of space to create a workable kitchen triangle.

Inspired by art

Greys and browns come together beautifully in the bedrooms, each space having a distinct character. The master bedroom has tropical wallpaper with cane detailing and white cabinetry for a soothing vibe. Meanwhile, the kid’s bedroom has a fun cloud wallpaper with a single bed and a corner study table. The guest bedroom has a muted grey scheme. Artworks and wallpapers have been sourced from Kalakaarihaath.

The Crimson Home successfully addressed the client’s brief by creating a spacious, well-lit, and culturally inspired living space. Using a neutral palette and strategic design elements like integrated panelling and artwork contributed to a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing interior.

Despite challenges the project achieved a harmonious balance between client requirements and design innovation, resulting in a unique and inviting living environment.
