Revive the old-world charm at this Mumbai apartment

Step into the world of ‘Nilima,’ a Mumbai apartment that seamlessly blends old-world charm with contemporary elegance. From its captivating blue hues to its intricate architectural details, every aspect of this space tells a story of sophistication and style. Join us on a journey as we unveil this home

Nilima means beauty through reflections of blue, this house pays homage to its namesake by incorporating shades of blue into its aesthetic palette. These hues, ranging from soft pastels to deeper tones, infuse the space with a sense of calm and introspection while maintaining a sombre elegance that resonates with the concept of modern minimalism.

The narrative journey

In the living space, lighting fixtures play a pivotal role in guiding the circulation, casting soft glows that accentuate the curvature of the ceiling. Here, a central and grand seating arrangement takes centre stage, allowing for seamless movement and functionality around the room. The furniture, upholstered in luxurious fabrics, invites relaxation and contemplation, serving as a focal point for social gatherings and quiet moments alike. The dining area, flanking the entrance to the kitchen and guest bedroom, flaunts a Patagonian table top with a curved angular base in brass. In the kitchen, mocha cabinets and a speckled white countertop create a harmonious contrast against the blue and grey backdrop.

For the avid readers and artists that reside within its walls, NILIMA boasts an extensive collection of books, discreetly integrated into the design. From bookshelves that line the walls to hidden compartments ingeniously concealed within furniture, every inch of space is maximized to accommodate the family’s vast literary treasures. Art pieces and paintings adorn the walls, each telling a story and adding depth to the space. These treasures have been collected by the family of four who call this house home—a young couple, a devoted mother, and a 10-year-old son.

Memorabilia, prints, plants and books, are elements that add life to the interior and show the character of the owner. Throughout the house, thoughtful details abound each one a testament to the homeowner’s impeccable taste and discerning eye. From hand-painted murals that pay homage to Mumbai’s vibrant street art scene to intricately carved woodwork that celebrates India’s rich cultural heritage, every element tells a story of passion and craftsmanship.

Crafting the experience

Concealed within the home lies a sanctuary of spiritual solace – a puja area discreetly nestled behind pocket doors, where the family gathers to seek blessings and offer prayers in reverence. And for moments of relaxation and indulgence, a carefully crafted bar awaits, ready to offer respite and refreshment.

The focal point of the guest bedroom is its arched back wall, gracefully curving upward to create a sense of openness and elegance. Adorned with intricate detailing, the arch adds a touch of architectural charm, inviting you to explore further. Against this captivating backdrop, the walls are dressed in foliage wallpaper, where muted greenery cascades delicately, breathing life into the space. The wallpaper infuses the room with a sense of serenity as if you’re nestled within a verdant forest retreat. Complementing the botanical theme, the muted colour scheme envelops the room in a soothing palette of soft tones. Shades of ivory, taupe, and sage interplay harmoniously, evoking a tranquil atmosphere conducive to rest. The cabinetry, with its curved edges, mirrors the organic flow of the room’s design.

The private retreat

The interior of the kids’ bedroom is both cosy and functional, designed to inspire creativity and provide ample storage space. The platform bed serves as the focal point, crafted from warm, inviting wood that adds a natural touch to the room. Tucked beneath the bed are storage compartments, cleverly maximizing space while keeping the room tidy. Next to the foot of the platform bed, a sturdy desk sits against the wall, its sleek midnight blue finish contrasting beautifully with the warmth of the wood. This desk is a versatile space for homework, art projects, or simply a spot for imaginative play. Above the desk, shelves stretch across the wall, offering plenty of room for books, toys, and cherished possessions. The shelves also feature the same dual-colour scheme, with the wooden frame providing a sturdy base for the midnight blue shelves.

The master bedroom showcases a super minimal colour scheme of muted greys and muted green hues. A sentimental piece of storage was refurbished and given a bright greenish custom to add a deeper connection between the homeowners and their literary treasures. The ceiling shows soft curves and embraces a cosy pendant light. The walk-in wardrobe and dresser and designed to provide maximum storage and accessibility. The feature wall is coated with a subtle painted texture from Asian paints with a cherished painting of the Starry Night.

In Mumbai, where the old and the new collide in a kaleidoscope of culture and creativity, this house stands as a beacon of sophistication and style. From its bones to its serene bedrooms, every corner is a testament to the enduring allure of luxury living in the heart of the city.
