Size up on bespoke luxury in this 5,500 sq ft contemporary Kolkata duplex

This duplex home designed by A Square Designs in Kolkata’s upscale Ballygunge circle in the heart of the city resonates with the unassuming sophistication of its occupants.

Spread across 5,500 sq ft, this home has been thoughtfully crafted for the comfort of different generations. An edgy and modern space, this five-bedroom home has come to fruition with the enthusiasm and zeal of our client Jyoti Saraf.

An edge above

The initial vision for this project was to create a unique and harmonious space that seamlessly blends modern design with a sense of familiarity. The client was looking for an edgy and modern home with a focus on interior designing detailing. The home had to be planned to make it comfortable for the family on a high rise high rise and a higher floor. The interiors had to be planned keeping in mind the requirements of the family residing. the home is for new-age young adults keeping in mind the comfort of the parents who’d want familiarity and warmth. The project was planned considering the lifestyle of both sets.

As you enter the house through the lower floor, it opens into a large living dining space with the base palate of neutral muted bluish grey fully cladding the wall. As you enter the dining area, your gaze is arrested by a beautiful nature-inspired painting by artist Umakant Kanade. This home being bang in the middle of a busy urban city scape, we envisioned a space bringing elements of the outdoors inside. Case in point is the hanging light by Jade Designs, customised on the “Natural Foliage” theme. Complementing these perfectly are the sumptuous furniture pieces giving bespoke manufactured by Ochre At Home giving the living dining space a suave look and feel. The ivory, brown and blue colour scheme running across the space gives this space a warm yet sophisticated look.

Larger than life choices

One of the cosiest spaces in the house is perhaps the corner in the living room with an elevated seating on the left resting on a geometric-pattern-marble flooring giving a three-dimensional from the top. A stunning classic chandelier adds to the exquisite look of this space. Right next to this is the piece de resistance of the house – the double height staircase wall that has been seamlessly cladded with burl veneer. For this project, the design team was super excited to use the exquisite Burl Veneer which, one of the most expensive woods originating in France. Getting the staircase planning correct was one of the most challenging parts of this projects as two simplexes were merged to make a duplex. This space is the perfect example of our design ethos for this project —work with clean lines and geometric shapes along with simple yet crisp textures. The colour palette being neutral with a slight pop of colour in some places.

The lower floor houses the kitchen, the parents and the guest bedroom. The kitchen was an important aspect for the house owner — a passionate baker. Keeping it classic with rich black slabs and a grey cupboards, keeping everything neatly concealed we gave a roomy and spacious look to the kitchen. A sense of cool and classic elegance permeates the air of the parents’ bedroom. A double bed with a rich beige headboard keeps the tonality warm while the black and golden side table lamps bring in the elegance. Right next to it is the small but smart and functional guest bedroom with a striking green chain lamp is the key resident of this space.

Tailored opulence

It is on the upper floor that the family can get together in the lounge, replete with a home theatre system. Leather recliners, a special Bar Cabinet designed like Leather Trunk complete this room. Right next to it is the Master bedroom, juxtaposing shades of pale rose with wood. A sumptuous white marble and velvet headboard creates a luxurious vibe while an overhead wardrobe adds to the functionality of the room with ample light. The protagonist of this room is The Hasting Couch —a two-seater sofa, cladded with a pastel rosé coloured velvet is by Ochre At Home. This room also houses a client’s special request – the bathroom with its own large Dover White Marble unit with metal accents in gold attached to the closet and a free-standing bathtub. Exuding European vibes, the bathroom was custom made.

The daughter’s room is contemporary chic with trendy cluster lights and a Japanese Kakemono scroll art work. The colour hues are bright and the interconnected verandas bring the outdoors greenery in.

We can describe this project as a “new age functional yet stylish compact Inspired Modern Living.” We used a variety of materials, including reclaimed wood for flooring and beams, natural stone for accent walls, and large glass panels to maximize views. Each corner of this space has its own unique story, but one of our favourites is the transformation of a small alcove into a cosy reading nook, offering a serene retreat within the home.
