“‘Indianess’- This is the word that comes into the mind when we step inside this abode!” says Ar. Kavita Batra, Founder and Principal Architect at Uniifyy. The client aimed to have an abode that told a story through design along with contemporary aesthetics. To turn their visions into a reality, they approached the team of Uniifyy to have a design that reflects a sense of boldness and vibrancy, awakening the joy within the residents.
In harmony with the context
The idea was to follow the concept of storytelling with culture and contemporary aesthetics. “We created a residence which evoked the essence of culture and brought the occupants ‘One Step Closer to Indianness’. With a blend of traditional Indian aesthetics and contemporary design principles, the design emanated a culturally immersive living environment”, says Kavita. Bold colours and muted neutral palettes created a dynamic and inviting living environment.
The design revolved around a courtyard connecting residents with the outdoors and curating liveliness in the residence. The courtyard acted as a natural ventilator, facilitating cross-ventilation across the living areas. As one moves indoors, they are welcomed by the living area, the epitome of boldness and Indianess. The design raised above the conventional wood and veneer panels, to go for vibrant metallic panels in muted red hues. Its clean lines and edges curated a minimal aesthetic as desired by the client. Vibrant hues reminiscent of Indian landscapes were thoughtfully integrated into the decor, while neutral tones provided balance and sophistication.
Layers of tradition
Transitioning to the bar area, it was designed with a contemporary theme through neutral hues and minimal design. To add a sense of drama, the team incorporated an organic-formed navy blue sofa, that juxtaposed the space with style. Traditional Indian craftsmanship was celebrated through intricate paintings, handwoven textiles, and artisanal decor pieces, which added depth and authenticity to the design. Cultural frames and decor elements like wallpapers, textiles, portraits of Indian figurines, and artworks such as paintings completed the design.
The essence of ‘Indianness’ is further emphasised with a Vastu-compliant design, adhering to the five elements of Earth. Following the norms of Vastu, the courtyard served as a focal point and the idea of space, fostering a connection with nature. Complementing the elements, lush green plants, reminiscent of Earth were strategically placed throughout the space, curating a refreshing vibe. This passive strategy enhanced indoor air quality and significantly reduced energy consumption. The kitchen was designed in the southeast zone, mimicking the element of fire. Central to the design was the use of wood, which is prominently featured in the bespoke furniture, infusing warmth and elegance into each space. Water features were included near the entrance in the northeast, creating a welcoming space. Further, Eucalyptus veneers added a unique aesthetic to the interiors, offering durability and a sophisticated finish.
Breathing new life
The residence followed an eco-conscious design. With passive design strategies, the use of local materials like tiles, and responsibly sourced wood veneer sheets, the design resonated with a sustainable ethos. Refurbishing in the study area led to the reuse of old furniture pieces, minimising the need for raw resources. This creative reuse exemplified the ethos of sustainability, proving that thoughtful design can blend heritage and modernity while championing eco-conscious living.
In essence, the residence was a celebration of Indian heritage through tasteful decor accents, rich textures, and vibrant colours that evoked a sense of warmth and cultural depth.
