Take your soul on a serene retreat in this cottage between the Kasauli Hills

Nestled in the incredible Kasauli hills of Himachal Pradesh lies a charming second home, a tranquil retreat designed by Gauri Dhawan from House of DC, that seamlessly blends tradition with a touch of contemporary elegance.

Far from the city’s hustle and bustle, this cottage radiates serenity and natural beauty. The design concept here revolves around a palette of muted tones and subtle shades, with occasional pops of colour, creating a cosy and inviting atmosphere.

This design breaks away from the typical Himachal architectural style by integrating stone and texture elements and incorporating traditional art from across India into a modern context, making it a space that intrigues and calms the soul.

Soulfully soft

Upon arrival, one stumbles upon a staircase leading to the upper and lower levels. The lower floor provides an indirect entry, revealing an alluring vestibule with a stylish console and a commanding free-standing column, creating a portal-like entrance. Inside, the living area features soothing grey walls against a warm wooden ceiling, setting a serene ambience. The stone wall accompanying your descent from the staircase becomes a focal point as you sit comfortably on the muted couch, enhanced by the intricate ceiling design. A splendid fireplace in the portal area becomes the focal point for relaxation. Seamlessly transitioning from the living area to the dining space, wooden walls envelope one, while a striking live-edge dining table takes centre stage.

Encircled by a bench along the wall and thoughtfully placed accent chairs, the dining area seamlessly flows into the kitchen and the bedroom, creating a cohesive and harmonious ambience throughout the lower level. A neutral colour palette combines with textured walls in the bedroom to create an inviting atmosphere. The room exudes a soft vibrancy, perfect for peaceful rest, while the winter sun warms up the space on a cold morning.

Window to the world

The upper floor hosts two bedrooms: a master suite, a playful kids’ room and a balcony. The master bedroom exudes richness with its sweeping mountain views. A grand four-poster bed takes centre stage against the subtle backdrop of the walls and the sloping ceiling. The room adorns an exquisite rug above the bed. The kids’ room adopts a Japanese-inspired design with red accents, offering versatile space for various activities. A platform bed accommodates two separate beds, leaving ample room for play, relaxation, and additional seating.

Living within art

Traditional Indian art pieces, including a captivating Madhubani art piece and papier-mâché from Bihar, miniature artwork from Bikaner, handcrafted recycled wooden pieces and tribal masks from Nagaland, can be found in every nook and cranny of the house, creating curiosity and interest. The furniture sourced carefully or crafted on the site adds to the cottage’s refined character.

This home beautifully marries tradition and modernity, delivering a soothing yet stimulating space. Art from diverse corners of India deepens the cultural richness of the interior, while adaptable design and a harmonious colour scheme offer comfort and tranquillity. More than a cottage, it reinvents the Himachal experience, providing a fresh and inviting retreat.
