Tune into nature’s rhythm at this tranquil residence where light and life coalesce

Designed by Saga Architects, this bungalow in Nanded, Maharashtra is a testament to the beauty of simplicity, where thoughtful design and natural materials come together to create a serene and inviting space.

The design revolves around a stunning double-height courtyard, the central attraction of the house. This airy space connects the living, dining, and recreational areas, creating a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces.

A light-filled oasis

The grand entryway leads into a double-height space adorned with a brick jali façade, where the interplay of light and shadow captivates the eye. Here, elements such as a uniquely carved stone Tulsi Vrindavan and a gently flowing Goa-Mukh waterfall in the Brahmasthan infuse serenity, complemented by lush greenery that grounds the space in nature.

In the living room, a modern minimal aesthetic prevails, featuring expansive windows that invite the outdoors in. This design choice allows for generous light and a seamless connection to the surrounding greenery, making the room a favored gathering spot for family interactions. For a client who enjoys hosting, the simplicity and functionality of the furniture promote comfort without sacrificing style.

The kitchen and dining area serve as a home-maker’s haven, embodying contemporary efficiency with fully equipped amenities. Shaker-style shutters in solid wood with a veneer finish elevate the kitchen’s aesthetic, imparting a premium feel. The open layout encourages interaction, transforming culinary tasks into shared experiences. Terracotta jali on the southern façade introduces dynamic light patterns throughout the day, enhancing the space’s vibrancy. With the dining area overlooking a green balcony and a central courtyard, each meal becomes a visual delight.

A dramatic double-height mandir emerges as a focal point of spirituality within the home. The soaring ceiling, accentuated by 3D wall paneling, creates an atmosphere of grandeur, while patterned flooring harmonizes dark and light tones to add depth. Minimalist furniture, characterized by clean lines, complements the mandir’s tranquil beauty, ensuring a space that inspires peace and reverence.

Transition spaces play a crucial role in the home’s design, particularly the double-height passageway leading from the entrance to the living, dining, and kitchen areas. Natural light floods this corridor through terracotta jali screens, casting intricate patterns and enhancing the airy ambiance. Adjacent to the courtyard—a tranquil oasis filled with greenery and a soothing waterfall—the passage embodies a harmonious blend of indoor and outdoor elements.

A secondary passage provides an intimate connection between the living area and the mandir. Encased by textured concrete walls, this corridor offers glimpses of serene design elements from the mandir on one side and lush greenery on the other, fostering a sense of mystery and allure.

Rugged elegance

The master bedroom exemplifies sophistication and warmth, characterized by a neutral palette that promotes relaxation. A patterned floor adds visual intrigue, while solid wood furnishings create a cozy atmosphere. The wooden ceiling enhances rustic charm, and a glass-backed bed frames views of a hanging window garden, connecting the interior to the natural world outside.

In the parent bedroom, simplicity reigns. The minimalistic design allows solid wood furniture and hand-painted elements to shine, fostering a peaceful retreat that balances elegance and tranquility.

The children’s bedroom embraces a vibrant aesthetic, combining modern furniture with playful designs. A terracotta 3D fluted panel serves as a focal point, while a glass wardrobe introduces sophistication. The hidden bathroom door adds an element of surprise, transforming this space into a joyful environment for kids.

Central to the home, the double-height courtyard is an architectural triumph, with a skylight featuring an intricate grill design that filters sunlight, creating captivating light patterns. Wicker hanging lights introduce playful colors and textures, enhancing the courtyard’s inviting atmosphere.

Comforting experiences

The home theater marries advanced technology with thoughtful aesthetics, featuring state-of-the-art sound systems and carefully designed acoustic panels. A harmonious blend of terracotta hues and hand-painted elements enriches the space, creating an immersive environment for cinematic experiences.

Two distinct terraces offer diverse outdoor experiences. Thoughtfully positioned, the southern terrace captures sunlight, while the northern terrace provides a refreshing breeze. The rear terrace, adorned with patterned mosaic flooring, ensures privacy while allowing glimpses of the central courtyard. The front terrace, enclosed by brick jali fenestration and a cozy pergola, serves as a snug retreat that overlooks the bustling outside world.

Through careful planning and design, this residence exemplifies how architecture can enhance user experience by fostering connections to nature, community, and the beauty of everyday living. Each space tells a story, reflecting a journey through light, texture, and thoughtful design, ultimately creating a sanctuary that nurtures both body and spirit.
