Wander into wabi-sabi wonders at this rustic Kolkata residence

In the heart of Kolkata, amidst the urban hustle and bustle, this serene escape by Infinity Atelier harmonizes with nature while embracing a rustic and minimalist aesthetic.

During the first meeting with Utsav and Pooja Ganguly, the couple expressed a clear vision: they sought a home that harmonizes with nature while embracing a rustic and minimalist aesthetic. Inspired by this vision, the design team chose to implement the principles of Wabi-Sabi—an artistic philosophy that celebrates imperfection, simplicity, and the beauty of natural materials.

Organic inspirations

The core inspiration for this project centered on creating a tranquil environment that aligns with the couple’s values. The Wabi-Sabi approach provided a framework that emphasizes organic structures and natural materials, inviting a sense of calm and comfort into the living space. The design aimed to create a seamless integration with the surrounding environment, enhancing the couple’s experience of home as a nurturing retreat.

The design strategy involved crafting spaces that resonate with warmth and authenticity. Each element was chosen not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its capacity to contribute to the overarching theme of peaceful living. By emphasizing the beauty of natural materials, the home serves as a reminder of the serenity found in simplicity.

The material palette is integral to the design, showcasing a blend of natural and raw elements, including limocoat, cane, SPC flooring, and micro concrete. These materials were specifically chosen for their organic textures and ability to age gracefully, which is essential to the Wabi-Sabi charm.

Furnishings made from cotton, linen, jute, and reclaimed wood contribute to a tactile experience that feels both comforting and grounded. The integration of handmade ceramics and artisanal elements adds uniqueness to the design, reinforcing the home’s connection to craftsmanship.

Nature’s palette of colours

In keeping with the Wabi-Sabi theme, the selection of limocoat paint was an obvious choice, providing a warm and inviting backdrop throughout the home. One of the standout features is the living room’s bay window, which creates a seamless transition between the indoor and outdoor environments. This design element maximizes natural light and fosters a sense of openness that connects the space to nature.

Hand-molded shelves made from clay and lime adorn the walls, adding a tactile and organic quality to the interior. The soft arches integrated into the design not only contribute a sculptural element but also enhance the overall aesthetic cohesion. A butcher block-style table serves as the centerpiece of the dining area, showcasing the natural beauty of wood grains and rustic charm.

The theme of arches is consistently reflected throughout the house, including in door designs, fostering a harmonious flow between different spaces. In the porch and various indoor areas, rattan-style pots house lush greenery, providing a vibrant contrast to the predominantly beige color palette.

The den area introduces a touch of sleekness with a fern green wooden bookshelf, subtly adding color while maintaining the overall earthy vibe. This thoughtful blend of styles enriches the design, creating depth and character that speaks to the couple’s desire for a unique home.

Handcrafted Elements and Cultural Influences

Collaboration with local artisans was a key aspect of the project, infusing the space with authenticity. This partnership allowed for the incorporation of one-of-a-kind pieces that enhanced the overall design narrative, making each element feel special and thoughtfully placed.

The ENSO house is further enriched by handcrafted elements sourced from various cultural hubs. Items from the Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok, including wooden flower vases and jute wall hangings, introduce organic textures and serene accents. Contributions from Vietnam, such as metal gongs and antique blue pottery, each carry historical narratives that enhance the home’s character. Additionally, Shantiniketan offers unique ceramics from Lipi Bose Ceramic Boutique, reinforcing the home’s connection to craftsmanship and nature.

Sustainable Measures

Sustainability plays a crucial role in this design, with the use of reclaimed wood and other repurposed materials underscoring a commitment to environmentally conscious practices. The incorporation of energy-efficient lighting and ventilation systems ensures that the home remains sustainable while offering aesthetic beauty.

The unique selling proposition of this project lies in its intelligent layout. The design maximizes a compact living area, comfortably seating up to ten people without feeling cramped. By eliminating the traditional dining table, the space feels open and inviting, exemplifying smart, cozy living.

In conclusion, the Ganguly residence stands as a testament to the beauty of Wabi-Sabi design principles, offering a tranquil retreat that embraces the essence of nature. This home not only fulfills the couple’s aspirations for a minimalist lifestyle but also serves as an inspiring example of how thoughtful design can transform a space into a peaceful haven. By blending natural materials, cultural influences, and sustainable practices, this project demonstrates the potential for design to create meaningful connections between people and their environment.
