It is located in a plush and natural setting, 5 minutes away from M2M (Mumbai to Mandwa) ferry service, the villa stays parallel to the firm’s unerring understanding of being contextual and thoroughly practical. This generational home aspires to have a young and eccentric vibe. With its quirk and a melange of materials, this getaway home allows you to unwind and yet be entertained.
A tropical lifestyle
The clientele’s brief was to have a sanctuary where they can purely de-stress with spaces that marry the indoors and outdoors. In response, the design encourages an open plan where materiality adds momentum. Be it the custom-designed 30,000 square feet of wood-plastic composite (WPC) ceiling over the extent of the house or the natural facade stone in the interiors and exteriors—they lend spaces that are balanced, light, and airy.
An extensive 22-feet main door opens up to 1,200 square feet of double-height living space, followed by the dining and kitchen. The focal point is the central living with high ceilings that have an air of expanse. Taking a step back from the traditional interpretations of art, this space introduces a maximalist approach with a playful spirit. Be it the giant-sized Hulk figurine or the industrial-ribbon-like staircase in corten steel with its detailed perforations; the design delves into a sanctuary with a glam quotient.
The ground floor is dedicated to entertaining guests and looking after their comfort. There is a home theatre, for an elaborate movie-watching experience, followed by two guest bedrooms. An entertainment room with informal seating, a bar counter, and an open plan is laid out to face the outdoors revealing the pool. There are several decks and courtyards around the villa that merge with the landscaping and the outdoors.
The upper floors are for the family, with master bedrooms, kids’ bedrooms, a family room with a dining space, and a small library. Every master bedroom has a continual connection to its bathroom with an outdoor shower experience. Rather than treating it as a separate-closed entity, they stay luxe and nature-centric; an ideal layout for an outhouse.
Materiality and art
With materials and elements that contradict each other, the design manages to retain a visual balance that appeals to generational living. This playful sanctuary invites art and a melange of unconventional materials and choices. Although, the backdrops maintain their sombre presence to fit the eccentricity of the elements.
Defying ‘beach house’ stereotypes
The villa moves past the conventional beach houses where all spaces overlook the waves or a house in the hills with uninterrupted greens. Instead, the designers optimise on the clientele’s interests to create a weekend retreat, uber-personalised for its user. What catches the attention are the massive 9-feet tall marvel figurines in the garden with a glass of beer in their hand, deep down in their own conversations.
A few generational homes can deliver distinctive experiences for each individual within the same space, this home manages to do it all. The king-size hulk figurine stands close to an artwork of a deity, an ornate Ganesh sculpture sits opposite an abstract and minimal seating area and the industrial-styled staircase stands bold amidst the minimalist backdrop of stone; the contrast is visible but it never overpowers.
This home lets every element have its own spotlight from time to time, making this a truly timeless design to its core.
